In the story lord of the flies there are numerous forms of
symbolism one of the less prevalent forms of symbolism is the comparison
between jacks "mask" and piggy’s spectacles lets dive in and see what
these symbols mean in depth shall we?
To start off piggy’s
glasses similar to piggy himself, represent the idea or concept of knowledge/ innovation.
His glasses are the sole thing that the boys know how to use in order to produce
fire, the fire that they light is perhaps the most sensible thing that the boys
do; the signal fire is the only thing that can save them. So in a way the spectacles
represent some time of knowledge that is needed to survive however one that we
cannot use to explain phenomenon. Glasses: innovation/ Glasses: Hope
On the other end
of the spectrum Jack's mask represents the turn from enlightenment to savagery
and hate, in stark contrast to piggy's glasses which are used to benefit the
group, jacks’ mast simply serves himself; when he wears the mask it makes him unaware
of his action he loses emotional. In addition to this he feels that his actions
have no consequences. Mask:Savagery/ Mask: Cruelty
I agree with your statements.I think Piggy's glasses are very significant in this chapter. I does keep all hope for the boys because it makes the signal fire. I also think it interpreted savagery. I say this because his glasses were broken for the fire showing that they will do anything to get rescued.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you but i think that jacks mask represents evil and how people can change so quick with out even realizing it. I also think that piggy's glasses don't represent him, i think they represent how people see him and what he see about people and how he can understand things better than the other kids on the island.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything in your blog. I think you had so very valid point and they were al backed up with some kind of detail to describe it. I really agree with you when it said piggy’s glasses of knowledge and innovation. What you said bout the mask was very interesting. I had never heard that the mask served for him and not the group. Great job and it was really good.
ReplyDeleteI agree on both parts. I feel that Piggy is the most considerate and intelligent boy on the island. His glasses really represent that. Jack's mask shows that he isn't even Jack anymore, he is becoming even more savage then before. His mask covers his true self and while he has it on, he is another, completely savage, boy.
