JACK'S MASK VS PIGGY'S GLASSES

In the story lord of the flies there are numerous forms of symbolism one of the less prevalent forms of symbolism is the comparison between jacks "mask" and piggy’s spectacles lets dive in and see what these symbols mean in depth shall we?

To start off piggy’s glasses similar to piggy himself, represent the idea or concept of knowledge/ innovation. His glasses are the sole thing that the boys know how to use in order to produce fire, the fire that they light is perhaps the most sensible thing that the boys do; the signal fire is the only thing that can save them. So in a way the spectacles represent some time of knowledge that is needed to survive however one that we cannot use to explain phenomenon.           Glasses: innovation/ Glasses: Hope

On the other end of the spectrum Jack's mask represents the turn from enlightenment to savagery and hate, in stark contrast to piggy's glasses which are used to benefit the group, jacks’ mast simply serves himself; when he wears the mask it makes him unaware of his action he loses emotional. In addition to this he feels that his actions have no consequences.  Mask:Savagery/ Mask: Cruelty

FEAR....

Fear, as much as we try to suppress our emotions we cannot suppress our deepest most primal emotion... FEAR this is as primal as an instinct as there can be we each have our own definition of fear however it’s better to start with a scholarly definition: what is Fear?
fear/fi(É™)r/
Noun:
An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

Now that we know what fear is let me tell you mine... Through the words of FDR:
Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself

You see this quote by no means indicates that I fear nothing; rather it shows that my fear is of EVERYTHING! Fearing fear means that you are aware of the consequences of your actions and how they could potentially affect you, I summarize all these consequences in a single word: FAILURE. You see failure to me means defeat it means that you have not fulfilled your duty and thus you have failed yourself your family and all those who know you. To fail you could say is my "biggest" fear. Also failure for some may be solely academic however for me I look on a grand scale my greatest fear is to fail in life itself (academics included).

However it is this fear of failing that enables me to do what I do, as a result of my fear to failing I strive to succeed for I cannot even fathom the repercussions and consequences if I were to fail in life; you only have one chance! What I fear is the feeling of losing, failing, I have experienced these feeling once before and I never want to experience these emotions again. In my eyes 10 lifetimes living in fear is better than one day of loss or failure.

ets end this sad topic on a nicer note:( please laugh at the reason not the individual I would be ok with that grade:98)

COMPARISON OF LOST TO LORD OF THE FLIES

LOST the critically acclaimed TV show that everyone WAS watching :) how does this survival TV show compare to the critically acclaimed book LORD OF THE FLIES? Well lets start by getting the obvious out of the way: They are both tales of survival, they are both set on an apparently deserted island in a place where the chance of rescue is slim to none, also in both stories they arrive via a plane "crash" of some sort. However if one were to dive deeper they would then see how emotionally the stories are the same. In both stories the survivor who are left on the island are forced to make tough choices in order to increase their chances of survival. In both cases they attempt to model a civilization or some form of government based off of what they know. In both cases the survivors elect leaders and in both stories rivalries are formed, which eventually force certain members to become barbaric and savage. However there is one key difference in lord of the flies this turn to savagery or chaos occurs much more rapidly due to the fact that they are simply children thus they do not have as complex thought process to rationalize. In addition to this the children of lord of the flies have no form of modern weapons or technology to aid them. However with the overwhelming evidence pointing to their similarities one should be sure to ask: "How original is the show LOST?"

What external conflict exists between Ralph and Jack? What do you think is the source of the conflict? Write a paragraph suggesting what Ralph might do to get along better with Jack.

1: In the story lord of the flies the primary external conflict between the characters Jack and Ralph is that for control and dominance, as I see it each character wishes to show control and dominance over the other. This is expressed in many ways an excellent example of this are the meetings that are held in which they are constantly squabbling and talking over one another

2: The source of the conflict is quite simply: Human Nature for you see no one wishes to be a subordinate everyone wants to be a leader... and those who are not wish to dispose of the current leader. Jack is a prime example of this in addition to this he has also expressed several times his arrogance, this shows that he wishes to be leader

3:To be quite frank I think the solution is simple: Ralph must assert power and should restrict Jack, while at first hearing this you must be thinking "How will this make them friends?" however the goal is that if jack were to assert his power and dominance then Jack would start to respect Ralph and his authority and everyone knows the first step of friendship is that both party’s respect the other! Over time I believe that Jack would develop a close fondness to Ralph similar to that of Piggy. Piggy is Ralphs "friend" and "advisor" however unlike Jack who is very arrogant Piggy realizes his position in the world as a subordinate and thus maintains good relations with Ralph. It is my hope that if Ralph does not concede more of his power to Jack then Jack will then be like Piggy.

AUTHORS PURPOSE...

In the story Lord of The Flies it is sometimes hard to determine what the authors purpose is however after reading several chapters and conducting my own research on the books author: William Golding (a very intriguing figure in himself) When conducting my research I found that William Golding a British novelist had a very pessimistic view on the human psyche, he believed that humans without a society in which they are taught to uphold certain moral standards humans will turn into "savages". Through out the book Lord of the Flies he is constantly implying this concept. This primarily shown as the conflict between Ralph and Jack, one representing civilization and order with the other representing savagery and chaos. However he does an excellent job showing the change that the innocent children undergo, primarily in the character of jack who at first jack does not kill the pig "because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood". However as time progresses we the readers are shown that jack's lust for blood grows to the point where he even stops searching for a means of survival in order to hunt! As stated earlier the author’s purpose is to persuade the reader to abide by his own pessimistic view on life in an entraining fashion!
